ABSTRACT

The selection of appropriate extraction technology of Chinese materia medica (CMM) is the key phase in the preparation process of CMM preparation, and it is also the hot spot the industry personnel concerned about. In recent years, the extraction principle of CMM has been innovated, the technology has been improved and new ideas and methods have emerged. In the face of different kinds of extraction methods of CMM, how to select or innovate the appropriate extraction method to extract the effective components of CMM is a common difficult problem in accordance with the characteristics of multi-component groups of CMM. Therefore, it is urgent to sort out the extant situation of CMM, discuss the characteristics of interaction between multi-components of CMM and propose a set of optimization extraction methods adapted to multi-component objectives. Based on the above discussion, this paper firstly summarizes the present situation of CMM extraction, and introduces supramolecular chemistry, combined with supramolecular imprinting templates theory to put forward the theory, the method and the technology of qualitative and quantitative extraction of Chinese medicines which is suitable for the characteristics of active ingredients of Chinese medicines from the perspective of molecular social interaction. The aim is to promote the development of the extraction technology of CMM, make progress in the production technology of CMM preparations, and accelerate the process of modernization of CMM pharmaceuticals.

ABSTRACT

The compatibility law analysis of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is the core of modernization of TCM. Furthermore, "macro compatibility" and "micro compatibility" are two important components of formula compatibility. At present, due to the lack of research on the law of "macro compatibility", the research ideas are too narrow, which seriously restricts the development of modernization of Chinese materia medica (CMM). Under the guidance of TCM theory, we explore the study on the new mode of "grey screening" whose components are divided into the functional units by the current situation and deficiency of CMM research, treatment based on syndrome differentiation, grey systematology, the action of multivariate statistical methods, and new idea on the feasibility study and application prospect as well.

ABSTRACT

Chinese materia medica (CMM) is well-respected nowadays. Multinational pharmaceutical companies have grabbed huge market profits by implementing patent strategies, while we can see there are many problems in the protection of the intellectual property rights in CMM enterprises in China. Such as the consciousness on patent protection is not strong, the plan and management of patent mining is not reasonable, the layout of patent is not scientific, and so on, which seriously affects the development of the CMM industry. So the patent mining, the collection mechanism of inventive concept, collaboration applications of the types of patent layout have been discussed and studied in this paper, in order to promote the patent strategies to be effectively applied in the CMM industry in the process of modernization.

ABSTRACT

Chinese materia medica (CMM) is the product of long-term practice of clinical traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and it has the characteristics of overall effect of the multi-component and multilink multiple targets. Because of the complexity of CMM, it has not yet formed systematic and the scientific method for the TCM research, which seriously restricts the development of modernization of CMM. Under the guidance of TCM theory, we explore the study on the new mode of CMM whose components are divided into the functional units by the CMM research foundation of material basis, pharmacological mechanism, the structure optimization, and new idea on the CMM quality control based on composition structure theory and in vivo pharmacokinetic as well.

ABSTRACT

The vigorous advance on modernization of Chinese materia medica (CMM) has achieved great successes, which is the consensus of scholars. However, the physicians and populace have few awareness of the CMM modernization achievements. It is in great need to promote the modernization of CMM into clinic by translational medicine. The research pathway of CMM translational medicine could be summarized as a repeated cycle of bedside to bench to bedside. And, its main research might include two missions, one is the clinic-oriented standardization of CMM and the other is the clinic-derived discovery of CMM new drugs. The clinic-oriented standardization of CMM is focusing on the development of the effect-based evaluating methods and standards on CMM quality and drug property and promoting CMM integration of "species-quality-property-effect- usage", which aims at making doctors be able to comprehend and emply the CMM standards. The clinic-derived discovery of CMM new drugs diverges into two pathways: one is the development of traditional compound formula drugs based on the physicians' experiences and evidence-based medicine; the other is the innovation of modern multi-component CMM drugs based on the clinical specimens and -omic techniques. The clinic-derived drug discovery provides an efficient approach to develop novel CMM drugs with superior efficacy and safety to traditional ones. Thus, it is reasonable to suggest that the related administrations of state should strongly support the translational research of CMM by granting scientific research projects, training specialists of translational medicine, and reforming the regularities of new drug evaluation and relative policies.

ABSTRACT

The question that searching efficacy substance is not the key relevant to modernization of Chinese materia medica (CMM) was discussed in the following three aspects: its possibility, necessity and the feasibility of quality control without knowing the effect substance. It is pointed out that definite understandings of active components and mechamism, high and immediate efficacy are not the necessary characteristics of CMM. Searching the active ingredients is not main task for the modernization of CMM. On the basis of not completely knowing the active components, quality control and establishing standard system of evaluating herbal medicine efficacy with the characteristics of TCM are two key problems. The quality control of herbal medicine should be concentrated on multi steps, multi means and vague recognition of general characters. The characteristics of multi systematic, mild and slow, and pattern associated effects should be seriously considered in assessing herb efficacy on the prerequisite of being methodologically in accordance with modern science. In the meantime, the quality control study of herbal medicine must be on such a basis.

ABSTRACT

Systematic pharmacological evaluation of material basis for the efficacy of Chinese herbal formula is one of the key issues in Chinese materia medica(CMM),which is in urgent need of solution. However, its scientific connotation is still controversial in academic circles. The material basis for the efficacy of Chinese herbal formula is the total non-endogenous bioactive compound(derived either directly or indirectly from this formula) exerting the therapeutic effects, which is generated by the interaction of the formula with human body and reaches certain concentration in the target organs or tissues.Systematic evaluation of material basis for the efficacy of Chinese herbal formula is the cornerstone of modernization and internationalization of CMM,while the quality control of CMM is its prerequisite.

ABSTRACT

A novel fingerprint system of Chinese medicinal materials employing both DNA and chemical means has been proposed. To establish the fingerprint system is very effective to the quality control of Chinese medicinal materials, because it will be controlled from chemical substance and genetic information. The chemical components and DNA fingerprints will show the complex chemical components and biological source, respectively. DNA fingerprint could give a further proof to distinguish Chinese materia medica from the chemical. The combination of chemical and DNA fingerprints is constructive to quality control of Chinese materia medica, the cultivar identification and the selective breed of good varieties for medicinal use. To carry out the fingerprint system of Chinese medicinal materials, it is necessary to establish fingerprint database of Chinese medicinal materials, including chemical and DNA fingerprint, as well as many detection methods, and the pattern recognition system by computer is also necessary.
